Anyone in Arizona can experience a heat illness or even death from heat exposure, especially from the months of May to October. Our homeless population are at greater risk and more likely to succumb to extreme heat without appropriate precautions. Arizona summers are brutal for our unsheltered neighbors.

Maricopa County identified a total of 645 heat related deaths occurring in 2023. At least 45% of people who died were unsheltered and sleeping behind dumpsters, in car parks, or on burning hot sidewalks.

The Heat Relief Network is an annual campaign to reduce heat-related deaths during metro Phoenix’s hottest months, is up and running for 2024. The heart of the effort is a regional network of cooling centers, respite centers and hydration stations, and donation collection sites.
